Irish Champion Hurdle 2012 Review – Hurricane Fly Reigns Supreme

Hurricane Fly defied an eight-month lay-off and to record an effortless triumph in the BHP Insurance Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown yesterday.

On his eagerly-awaited reappearance, the 2011 Cheltenham hero left many reckoning that this second successive win in the two-mile Grade One was his most accomplished performance yet.

Given the length of the eight-year-old’s absence and the heavy going, not to mention the similarly facile manner of many of his nine previous top-level victories, maybe that says as much about the champion trainer’s expertise as it does about the horse itself. Nonetheless, Mullins suggested that the 4/5 favourite “completely surprised me”, after watching him cruise clear of Oscars Well in the driving rain.

“I don’t know what the handicapper thought, but it must be as good a performance as he has produced.

“I’m not sure he enjoyed the ground, but Ruby said that once he put him into the race three-out, he just came alive. I couldn’t be happier.”

Thousand Stars made sure there was a proper gallop despite the appalling conditions as he took the five runners along.

Oscars Well lay second with Hurricane Fly third, tracked by his main market rival Unaccompanied with rank outsider Kalann at the rear. There was no change in the order until Walsh asked Hurricane Fly to close before the turn for home and he did so with the minimum of fuss.

Although absent since winning the Rabobank Champion Hurdle at Punchestown in May, Hurricane Fly showed no signs of lack of race fitness as he displayed his superiority in no uncertain manner to draw six and a half lengths clear of Oscars Well.

All roads now lead to the Cotswolds and a second successive Champion Hurdle very much on the cards.

Premier League – Transfer Deadline Day Looms.

Roberto Mancini admits he doesn’t know whether Carlos Tevez will still be a Manchester City player on Tuesday night.

As the transfer window heads into its frenetic final stages, Tevez remains in Argentina, about to discover whether he will be forced into a rather humbling return to Manchester.

With prospective suitors Inter Milan and Paris St Germain out of the running, super-rich Russians Anzhi Makhachkala not under consideration despite claims of interest, and Tevez’s former club West Ham rating their chances of luring the South American to Upton Park on loan as so slim it is barely worth discussing, Tevez looks like he will be staying at City.

Yet, as Mancini knows only too well, the last hours before deadlines can trigger amazing deals, and with AC Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani not completely ruling out a further bid, uncertainty remains.

“I don’t know if he will be a City player after tomorrow,” said Mancini.

The chances of Tevez not being around appear to hinge on the unlikely instance of City contacting Milan to try and resurrect a deal for a player who was mentioned in a potential swap deal with Liverpool’s Andy Carroll last week.

As that tentative inquiry was snubbed, it is hard to see why the Blues would be willing to enter further negotiations with a club chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak accused of trying to sign Tevez on the cheap less than a week ago.

“I will be in the office from 0900 to 1900 hours for the last two days of the transfer window,” Galliani said to Milan Channel.

“I truly believe there will be no surprises. But who knows? In football, anything can happen.”

If Tevez remains a City player, it would pitch the 27-year-old back into a relationship with his manager that has never been good according to advisor Kia Joorabchian.

Yet those words, delivered on Friday, are at odds with the history of Tevez’s relationship with Mancini, who continues to insist there are no issues.

“Everyone should answer for his behaviour, always,” said the City manager. “These are the rules.

“If a player wants to join another club, it is an option for him. Maybe for the club it is a big problem.

“But Carlos doesn’t have any problem with me.”

Mancini was clear in his opinion the whole issue is an unwanted sideshow ahead of an important Premier League encounter with Everton at Goodison Park.

“Tonight we go to sleep, tomorrow we wake up and we have a game,” he said.

“That is the most important thing for us between now and tomorrow night.”

With Mario Balotelli serving the second game of a four-match suspension and both Yaya and Kolo Toure on African Nations Cup duty with the Ivory Coast, Mancini is relieved to have skipper Vincent Kompany available again.

The Belgium skipper has missed four matches since his controversial dismissal against Manchester United at the beginning of the month.

However, he is now free to assume the captain’s armband and replace youngster Stefan Savic, who retains his manager’s support despite some high-profile mistakes during Kompany’s absence.

“Stefan is a young player and when you are young, you can be in trouble for nothing,” said Mancini.

“Stefan should be quiet. He is a good player but he needs to improve.”

Kompany is the real deal though, one of the best in Europe in Mancini’s eyes.

“It is important to have Vincent back,” he said.

“He is a strong defender, who has improved a lot in the last two or three years.

“He is a leader and our captain, one of the best defenders in Europe now and someone who can still improve a lot.”

City’s abysmal Goodison Park record of one win in 13 trips means this is a fixture that Mancini cannot take lightly as his side look to preserve their three-point lead over Manchester United.

However, with 16 games remaining, the Blues chief does concede that the title looks set to be fought out between Manchester’s finest to the exclusion of everyone else.

“It is difficult for the others,” he said.

“It is impossible that us and Manchester United can lose all the games.

“There are 16 games and anything can happen, including Tottenham coming back into the title race.

“But at the moment it is City and United.”

Super Bowl 2012 – New York Giants v New England Patriots

Lee Westwood comfortably held off all challengers to retain the Nedbank Golf Challenge title.

The Worksop golfer, who established a seven-shot lead for the final round by carding a course-record 62 in South Africa on Saturday, closed with a one-over-par 73 to win by two shots.

Sweden’s Robert Karlsson finished second, with Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell and America’s Jason Dufner two shots further adrift on 11 under par at the Sun City resort.

Westwood finished with successive bogies, but it did not matter as his dominance was never seriously threatened.

Birdies on the sixth and ninth helped the 38-year-old’s cause, before a bogey on the 12th.

Although his finish was unspectacular, it did not prevent the world number three claiming a first prize of almost £800,000.

Westwood told the post-match presentation ceremony: “I’ve been coming here a long time, this is the ninth time, and it’s special every time I come.

“I love playing this course and yesterday was probably the best round I’ve ever played. It set me up to play conservatively today. It’s very satisfying.

“It’s all right when things go well and you are top of the rankings but when you drop to 270 you find out more about the real person.

“So to get invited back here and win back-to-back titles is a bit special.

“Yesterday was very special. I drove well and made a few putts, which you’ve got to do round any course when you make 10 under.”

McDowell made good ground to close on Westwood, before his challenge faded on the back nine as he double-bogeyed the 15th and dropped another shot on the next hole.

The 32-year-old told Sky Sports: “Today kind of summed up the week – I made some mistakes at the wrong time.

“I might have been in the mix but maybe pushed a bit hard last night and there was the double on the 17th – but all in all I’m happy with my game.”

Karlsson also made steady progress, until his hopes of turning the screw in the closing stages faltered when he found sand on the par-three 16th.

However, the Swede got the shot back when he birdied the 17th and made sure of second place when he made par on the last.

Kim Kyung-Tae finished fifth with a fourth round of 70, while home hope Charl Schwartzel was two shots further back on six under after a 72.

England’s world number one Luke Donald also managed a 72 to finish a further shot adrift in seventh, a shot clear of Germany’s Martin Kaymer – who slipped out of contention with a final round of 76.

2011 Tingle Creek Chase – Sizing Europe to reign supreme

Reigning Champion Chaser Sizing Europe tops the ratings heading into Saturday’s Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown.

Nine runners are declared for Saturday’s sportingbet Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown.

Sizing Europe leads the field for the top class 2 mile chase. The Irish challenger will be trying to break Paul Nicholls stranglehold on the Grade 1 chase.

Nicholls will be doubled handed in the race with Tataniano (Ruby Walsh) and Kauto Stone (Sam Thomas).

Long Run was the winner of the 2011 Cheltenham Gold Cup. The Nicky Henderson trained 6 year old Cadoudal gelding will be bidding to emulate Kauto Star by winning his second Gold Cup in 2012.

Imperial Commander
The 2010 Gold Cup winner was sent off a 4/1 second favourite to retain his crown in the 2011 running but was tailed off when pulled up before the last fence. Nigel Twiston-Davis will be hoping his stable star can return to form at his favourite racecourse where he has won 6 times in the 2012 Gold Cup.

Time For Rupert
Time for Rupert is one of the new kids on the block. He was sent off favourite for the RSA Novice Chase at the 2011 Cheltenham Festival, where he finished a disappointing fifth.
